Suzuki Motor Corp. is withdrawing from the American car market after 27 years.

Suzuki's other U.S. operations motorcycles, outboard boat engines and all-terrain vehicles will continue. American Suzuki Motor, the company's wholly owned U.S. distributor, has filed for bankruptcy protection in California.

The company says its automotive operations in the U.S. will continue to honor warranties and provide repair services. The parent company in Japan is not part of the U.S. bankruptcy.

Suzuki's car sales in the U.S. peaked at about 100,000 units a decade ago. But sales have slid since then, falling 5% to only 21,200 units in the first 10 months of this year, according to Autodata Corp.

Suzuki follows Isuzu Motors Ltd., which exited the American market three years ago.
