The U.S. Dept. of Commerce has hired Susan Helper, an Ohio economics professor who has studied the auto industry, as its chief economist.

Helper has served for the past year as senior economist for the president's Council of Economic Advisors. She is on leave from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where she specializes in the impact of global supply chains on regional development and innovation.

Helper wrote frequently in recent years about the auto industry crisis. She also has championed the importance of manufacturing to the U.S. economy and published studies about labor relations at North American suppliers.

At the Commerce Dept., Helper succeeds Mark Doms, who has been appointed the department's under secretary for economic affairs.
