Subaru Corp. says it will launch a plug-in hybrid version of its Crosstrek crossover vehicle later this year.
The long-rumored vehicle will be Subaru’s first plug-in model. The first-generation gasoline-electric Crosstrek was a standard hybrid.
The 2019 model teams Subaru’s 2.0-liter 4-cylinder “boxer” engine with the hybrid-electric system used in Toyota Motor Corp.’s Prius Prime sedan. Toyota owns 16% of Subaru.
All-wheel drive will be standard. Details about the Crosstrek’s hybrid’s power, battery size and range haven’t been released.
Last month Subaru trademarked the Evoltis name in the U.S. Media reports speculate that the name will be used in conjunction with the Crosstrek hybrid, but Subaru didn’t say so in its announcement.
The company launched the base Crosstrek in 2012, followed by the gasoline-electric model a year later. The second-generation Crosstrek, which shares a platform with the Impreza, was launched in 2017.
