David Strickland, who has headed the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration since 2010, will step down in 2014.

NHTSA confirms his departure but has not said when it will occur. When Strickland does leave, his second-in-command, David Friedman, will become acting administrator.

Friedman, who joined the agency in May as deputy administrator, is a fuel economy expert who formerly was a senior engineer with the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Strickland's tenure has spanned the development of the country's 54.5-mpg fuel economy targets for 2025, a crusade against distracted driving and Toyota Motor Corp.'s 10 million-unit global recall over unexpected acceleration problems.
