Tesla Motors Inc. is rolling out an over-the-air software update that the company says will shave 0.1 seconds off its Model S P100D electric vehicle’s already ultra-quick 2.5 second zero-to-60 mph acceleration time.
At 2.4 seconds, the Model S P100D would trail only the Porsche 918 Spyder and 2017 Bugatti Chiron, both of which can rocket to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, as the fastest production model. The Ferrari LaFerrari FXX K, Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Sesto Elemento also are clocked at 2.4 seconds, while a handful of race cars, concepts and limited-production hyper cars have broken the two-second threshold.
The software update also improves the Model S EV’s quarter-mile time by nearly 2% to 10.6 seconds. Similar updates will be available for the Model X P100D that will cut the SUV’s 0-60 mph time to 2.9 seconds.
The Model S P100D teams Tesla’s most powerful dual-motor powertrain with a 100-kWh battery pack, which provides a driving range of 315 miles. Prices start at $134,500.
