Sudhir Rao, who turned around the Indian operations of Volkswagen AG’s Skoda unit, tells the Economic Times he is leaving the company at the end of June to pursue “challenges outside the automotive industry.”
Rao took over as Skoda Auto India’s managing director—a position that had been vacant for four years—in 2012. Under his leadership, the unit cut costs by dropping its slow-selling Fabia five-door hatchback, reduces its workforce by 25% and moved the brand upmarket with models that carried higher profit margins.
Rao joined Skoda after four years as deputy managing director for Renault SA’s Indian unit. He previously spent more than 20 years with General Motors Co.
