Volkswagen AG’s SEAT unit plans to introduce its first electric vehicle by the end of the decade.
Speaking at the launch of the 2017 Leon hatchback in Europe, SEAT officials tell reporters the Spanish brand currently is testing prototypes of the unspecified EV. No other details were provided.
Additional EV will be added later, the company says. But the budget brand has no immediate plans to launch a hybrid-electric or fully autonomous vehicle, reasoning that both technologies would be too expensive for its customer base. Executives estimate that a hybrid drivetrain could add more than €10,000 ($11,000) to the price of a car.
