Volkswagen AG’s SEAT unit plans to introduce six electric and plug-in hybrid models by 2021.
The initiative will begin with an electric version of the Mii city car later this year, followed by the el-Born EV in 2020. The el-Born will be based on Volkswagen Group’s modular MEB platform, which will launch next year with the VW ID hatchback.
SEAT also is developing an entry-level EV that will be ride on a smaller version of the MEB platform. The Spanish carmaker will lead the development of that program, which is said to be a first for the brand.
A production version of the tiny Minimo electric quadricycle concept also is in the works. In addition, SEAT is planning plug-in hybrid variants of the all-new Tarraco large crossover vehicle and next-generation Leon hatchback.
Beyond its own models, SEAT’s Cupra performance sub-brand will get a plug-in hybrid version of the Cupra Leon. A hybrid derivative of the Formentor crossover—Cupra’s first stand-alone model—also is on tap.
SEAT sold 517,600 vehicles last year, up nearly 11% over 2017 levels. The top-selling Leon accounted for 30% of the total.
