Schaeffler AG is investing $60 million to retool its plant in Wooster, Ohio, to make hybrid modules for an unnamed carmaker in the U.S. next year.

The parallel hybrid modules consists of an electric motor and converter. The system is positioned between the engine and transmission in a so-called P2 configuration. Schaeffler began producing the same module in other regions earlier this year.

The renovated Wooster campus will serve as Schaeffler’s U.S. center of expertise for electrification products. Earlier this year the company announced plans to launch an E-Mobility unit and said it had won eight contracts for electric axles and hybrid modules worldwide.

Schaeffler says it has expanded the Wooster facility 20 times since it was opened 40 years ago. The 800,000-sq-ft site now employs about 2,000 people.
