Russia says it may counter any new trade sanctions from the EU by imposing caps on imported used cars from the region, the Financial Times reports.

The threat from Russia's top economic aide Andrei Belousov, reported by the state-controlled RIA Novosti news agency, came as the EU delayed a new round of trade restrictions against Russia over its role in civil unrest in Ukraine.

Several EU diplomats balked at implementing new sanctions related to Russian oil projects because of a partial cease fire between Ukraine government forces and Russian-backed rebels.

The EU has agreed instead on a late-September review of sanctions against Russia and asked the European Commission for options to amend, suspend or cancel the measures.
