BMW AG says it will launch the long-rumored roadster version of its i8 plug-in hybrid sports coupe in 2018.
BMW CEO Harald Krueger confirmed the timing at a press event last week in Santa Monica, Calif. No other details were provided.
The on-again, off-again program has been delayed several times since a concept i8 roadster debuted at the 2012 Beijing auto show. BMW launched the i8 plug-in hybrid coupe in 2014.
The 2018 roadster likely will be based on a facelifted version of the i8 coupe, which also is expected to get a more powerful electric motor and extended driving range. Media reports speculate that net output could be boosted by about 15% to 400 hp.
