KS Huayu AluTech GmbH, a member of Germany’s Rheinmetall Automotive AG, says it has won a €100 million ($112 million) contract to supply electric motor housings to an unnamed German carmaker’s China operations.
The contract is for seven years, with production of the aluminum housings to start by mid-2018 at Rheinmetall’s KPSNC Kolbenschmidt Pierburg Shanghai Nonferrous Components unit in China. The housings will be used in several upcoming all-electric cars sold exclusively in China, according to the supplier.
Rheinmetall says it will use a special low-pressure casting technology to make the aluminum housings, which weigh about 44 lbs. The company’s Neckarsulm, Germany, facility will develop and supply prototypes of the housings.
Rheinmetall (formerly KSPG and Kolbenschmidt Pierburg) expects electrification to account for more than half of its sales in 2020.
