British startup Charge Automotive Ltd. has developed an all-electric vehicle with the styling of a 1960s-era Ford Mustang.
The new EV uses a replica Mustang body shell licensed by Ford. The retro styling is offset by modern tweaks, such as a bulging hood,a larger grille and rear spoiler.
Power comes from two electric motors that produce a combined 500 hp and 885 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the original mid-’60s Mustang topped out with a 4.7-liter V-8 that generated 271 hp and 313 lb-ft.
The new model can sprint from zero to 62 mph in just under four seconds on its way to a top speed of 149 mph. A 64-kWh lithium-ion battery provides an estimated 200-mile range. The battery is positioned in the car’s skateboard chassis to lower the center of gravity and improve driving dynamics, the U.K. firm notes.
The interior is highlighted by a large touchscreen display. Drivers can select suspension settings and switch between rear- and all-wheel-drive.
Charge will publicly unveil the retro electric Mustang at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K. The company plans to produce 499 of the cars, which will have a starting price of £300,000 ($381,000).
