General Motors Co. will offer a variety of powertrain options in the upcoming C8 Chevrolet Corvette, including a 1,000-hp hybrid-electric system, Car and Driver reports.

At launch, the much-anticipated mid-engine ‘Vette will be powered by an updated version of the 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 used in the current Corvette Stingray, according to the enthusiast magazine. Output is expected to be increased nearly 9% to 500 hp.

Chevy also is planning to offer a 5.5-liter DOHC V-8 with a flat-plane crank that will generate 600 hp and redline at 9,000 rpm, C and D says. A twin-turbo variant will bump output to 800 hp.

Further out, the turbo 5.5-liter mill will be teamed with a 200-hp electric motor to produce a combined 1,000 hp, according to the enthusiast magazine It says the piston engine will power the rear wheels, and the electric motor will be used in the front to enable all-wheel drive.

All engine options will be mated with a new Tremec 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, C and D says, reiterating a previous report. The magazine adds that the new Corvette will use a mix of aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber to hold overall vehicle weight to about 3,500 lbs.

Other goodies reportedly will include coil springs and active aerodynamic devices. The latter will include a front-axle lift system that adjusts height based on vehicle speed and helps the low-slung car clear speed bumps and other ground obstacles.
