Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.’s Jaguar unit is developing two small hybrid SUV/crossover vehicles that could ride on a front-wheel-drive platform sourced from BMW AG, sources tell Autocar.

The so-called baby Jaguars would include an entry-level model and one with coupe-like styling, according to the report. Autocar says the crossovers likely would use the marque’s “Pace” naming designation.
If approved, the vehicles would be introduced by about 2025. The “super economical” vehicles would help Jaguar meet ultra-stringent emissions standards due in Europe at that time.
The BMW platform also could be used for next-generation Land Rover models, Autocar notes. The British enthusiast magazine suggests that these could include the next-generation Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport SUVs, plus a Defender-styled entry-level model that revives the Freelander name.
BMW currently uses the flexible fwd architecture for its tiny 1 Series car, X1 crossover and the carmaker’s entire Mini lineup. The platform can support a variety of powertrains, including hybrid and all-electric units.
Adding the Jaguar and Land Rover models would create greater economies of scale and allow the two carmakers to share the costs of the platform.
In June, BMW and JLR agreed to share electrified drivetrains based on BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology. JLR also may source piston engines from BMW.
