The next version of Audi AG’s R8 supercar due in 2020 will be an all-electric hypercar that can zip from zero to 100 kph in about 2.0 seconds, according to Autocar.
The British enthusiast magazine says the 1,000-hp all-wheel-drive two-door is likely to borrow powertrain elements from the three-motor PB18 e-tron concept (pictured) that Audi unveiled last month at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.
Th PB18 features a shooting brake body style with more interior room than the current V-10-powered R8. The all-wheel-drive concept is rated at 764 hp. Autocar says Audi targets a top speed of about 300 kph (186 mph) for the next-generation R8.
Audi debuted the mid-engine R8 in 2006 and updated the car in 2017. The company also produced a small batch of hybrid R8s in 2015.
But R8 sales have steadily slowed. Audi said in March it had dropped plans for a third piston-powered version of the car. But Autocar says the carmaker’s commitment to shift to electric powertrains has revived interest in an all-electric successor.
