Volkswagen AG is developing a second all-new electric vehicle for its Modular Electric Platform (MEB) that could be launched ahead of the previously announced electric crossover vehicle due in 2020, Autocar reports.

Sources tell the British enthusiast magazine the new model will be slightly larger than the Golf compact car. Its target driving range is about 310 miles, which would put it on par with Porsche’s upcoming Mission-E sedan and other future EVs.

The car is said to be championed by Herbert Diess, who heads VW’s namesake brand, and tentatively is due to bow in 2019. In addition to a high-capacity battery, the new EV will feature cutting-edge connectivity and infotainment systems, Autocar says. The magazine likens the significance of the program to that of BMW’s electric supercar. Before joining VW in late 2014, Diess was BMW’s chief development officer.

VW aims to introduce 20 new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles through 2020. It debuted the MEB platform with the Budd-e concept, which borrows styling cues from VW’s iconic Microbus, at last month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
