The next-generation of Daimler AG's Smart ForTwo and ForFour electric vehicles will use electric motors supplied by Renault SA, the companies announced today at the Frankfurt auto show. Electric and conventional versions of the 2017-model city cars are due late next year in Europe.

Renault will produce the motors at its plant in Cleon, France. The carmaker also uses them in its own Zoe EV.

Daimler's Deutsche ACCUmotive Batteries subsidiary in Germany will make lithium-ion batteries for the Smart EVs, which share a platform with the Renault Twingo subcompact car. Daimler and Renault-Nissan co-developed the platform as part of their five-year-old technical partnership.
