Renault SA plans to develop its own version of Daimler AG's next-generation Smart ForTwo city car, according to Leftlane, which cites an unidentified source.
The new model, likely to hit the market about a year from now, would be the smallest Renault ever. The online newsletter says the car may be called Twingo, a name Renault has used since 1993 for its slightly larger two-door city car.
Renault's version of the ForTwo will share identical running gear with the rear-engine Smart model, which will be powered by a 900-cc two-cylinder powerplant that makes about 64 hp, according to Leftlane.
The car is being developed under a partnership agreement between Daimler and Renault-Nissan to collaborate on a variety of vehicles and powertrains.
The newsletter says the ForTwo's styling will be inspired by the ForVision electric concept Smart unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. The report says designers are "going to great lengths" to give the Renault version a distinctively different exterior look.
