Renault SA's factory in Dieppe, France, has begun assembling Bollore Group's Bluecar all-electric vehicles. The city cars previously were produced only in Italy.
The two carmakers agreed last September to partner on Bluecar production. They also launched a joint venture that is 70% owned by Bollore to install electric car-sharing services throughout Europe.
The Dieppe facility specializes in small production runs. The factory, which employs 280 workers, eventually will use 30 of them to assemble Bluecars from parts supplied by Bollore.
The partners have not disclosed the size of the production run. Bollore says it currently has more than 4,500 Bluecars operating in France through its Autolib EV car-share service in Bordeaux, Lyon and Paris.
Bluecars, which are only 3.7 meters (12 feet) long, can travel 250 km (155 miles) per charge in normal urban conditions.
