PSA, Opel Tout “Real” Fuel Economy Data for Europe

Adam Opel AG plans this summer to join PSA Peugeot Citroen in reporting real-world fuel economy statistics on several models.
PSA published updated estimates for three models—the Peugeot 308 hatchback and Citroen DS3 mini-hatch and Grand Picasso minivan—in March. It will add 30 other models this spring, Automotive News Europe reports.
Meanwhile, Opel says it will offer revised fuel economy estimates for its Astra small car in June based on the market’s tougher worldwide harmonized light vehicles test procedures (WLTP) that will begin phasing in next year.
Critics have long complained that emission and fuel efficiency ratings derived from the current New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) are hopelessly optimistic because of numerous loopholes in the test procedures. But skeptics fret that the WLTP won’t be entirely realistic either.
CEO Carlos Tavares told reporters in early March that PSA is pushing ahead with its own more realistic numbers now to help offset damage inflicted on the entire European auto industry by Volkswagen AG’s diesel emission cheating scandal.
