PSA Peugeot Citroen is searching for another large carmaker to bring its compressed-air-powered hybrid powertrain to market, Autocar reports.
The system compresses air when a vehicle is coasting and uses the air to provide a boost for acceleration or climbing a hill. PSA has demonstrated the technology in a Peugeot 2008 and the new Citroen C4 Cactus crossover.
The company says the system delivers real-world improvements of 30% in fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions. But it also requires special components, including a hydraulic motor, high-pressure storage tank and custom gearbox.
PSA figures the technology requires a production run of about 500,000 systems per year to be economically feasible. The company is working with Robert Bosch GmbH to find a production partner, according to Autocar.
