Toyota Motor Corp. says U.S. sales of its Prius line of hybrid vehicles may miss the company's target of 250,000 units this year because of declining gasoline prices, Bloomberg News reports.

The average U.S. price of gasoline is $3.52 per gallon, down 9% from a year ago, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota's North America unit, tells the news service that it will be a "challenge" for the Prius family to boost U.S. volume 6% from last year's record high. Sales of the Prius hatchback, v wagon, c subcompact and plug-in hatchback fell 8% to 55,700 in the first quarter of 2013.

But Lentz notes that the company's overall hybrid volume continues to grow as it adds such new models as the Lexus CT 200h hybrid luxury hatchback and hybrid versions of such existing models as the Toyota Avalon fullsize sedan. Combined deliveries of all Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles climbed 4% year over year to 83,600 units in the January-March period.
