Toyota Motor Corp.'s lineup of Prius hybrid vehicles is outselling any other nameplate offered in California, Bloomberg News reports.
The news service cites data from the California New Car Dealers Assn. that show Toyota sold 46,400 Prius vehicles from January through September this year. Demand in the state accounts for 25% of U.S. Prius volume.
California's next-best-selling models after the Prius are the Honda Civic (43,100 units), Honda Accord (39,000 units), Toyota Camry (37,900 units) and Honda CR-V (22,500 units).
The Prius lineup now includes four models: the original five-door hatch and a plug-in variant, plus a smaller sedan (Prius c) and an MPV (Prius v). Bloomberg noted in May that Prius had become the world's third-best-selling brand after the Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus.
Analysts say high average fuel prices in California $4.55 per gallon compared with the national average of $3.74, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report are helping drive demand.
