Porsche AG confirms it will not develop a lower-cost roadster because anything cheaper than its $49,500 Boxster sports car "doesn't fit our brand."
Bernhard Maier, who heads Porsche sales and marketing, tells this week's Automotive News Europe Congress the brand is determined to maintain its image of exclusivity even as it boosts volume.
CEO Matthias Mueller told WirtschaftsWoche the same thing in January, nixing widespread reports that Porsche planned to introduce a successor to its 1950s era 550 Spyder, nicknamed the "James Dean Porsche" for its most famous owner. Porsche had been hinting about such a model for years.
Maier says the bottom end of Porsche's lineup will be defined by the Boxster and the company's upcoming Macan small SUV due next year. Last year the company's worldwide sales grew 18% to 117,000 units. Maier says Porsche's volume could reach 200,000 units by 2018 equal to 0.2% of the global market.
