Volkswagen AG’s Porsche arm is taking the lead on a purpose-built electric vehicle platform for high-end performance coupes and supercars, Automotive News reports.
AN says new SPE architecture could eventually be shared by fellow VW Group brands Audi and Lamborghini. One possibility is a less expensive replacement for Audi’s R8 e-tron supercar.
In a 2025 stratgy presentation in November, VW listed the SPE architecture as part of a third wave of EVs the company plans to launch in the mid-2020s. Company officials confirm the platform is in the works but haven’t provided details.
VW Group’s first wave of EVs—including VW’s new I.D. sub-brand and upcoming Audi, SEAT and Skoda models—will ride on the company’s MEB architecture. Porsche and Audi also are jointly developing a “PPE” (premium platform electric) chassis that’s expected to be used by at least three EV model families starting in 2021.
Porsche’s first EV, the Mission E sedan, is due late next year. The carmaker is using a dedicated platform, dubbed J1, for that vehicle. Power is expected to come from a dual-motor setup with as many as three output levels.
