Porsche AG now expects first-year sales of its upcoming Macan small crossover to reach 75,000 units a 50% hike from the forecast announced in February, according to WirtschaftsWoche, which cites no sources.
The German newspaper says Porsche has advised suppliers to prepare for the higher output when the vehicle goes into production late next year at Porsche's plant in Leipzig. Porsche is spending $654 million to prepare the factory and will hire more than 1,000 workers to build the 2014 model.
The Macan, previously code named Cajun, will share its architecture with the Audi Q5 crossover, much as Porsche's larger Cayenne crossover rides on the platform that also carries the Volkswagen Touareg.
The new model will become Porsche's fifth, joining the Cayenne, Panamera sedan and 911 and Boxster/Cayman sports cars. Autocar says the Macan will offer a choice of four engines, at least in Europe, ranging from a 2.0-liter diesel rated at 190 hp diesel to a 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 370 hp.
