Volvo Car Corp.’s Polestar electric vehicle unit unveiled its second model, the Polestar 2 compact sedan, ahead of its public debut at next week’s Geneva auto show.

Built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture, the new EV features a sporty fastback design with a large glass roof. Power comes from a pair of electric motors that generate a combined 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. Polestar says the vehicle can sprint from zero to 100 kph in less than five seconds.

The battery is integrated into the vehicle’s chassis, which the carmaker says improves rigidity and helps reduce noise levels by 3.7dB.
A performance package features Brembo brakes, Ohlins shocks and 20-inch forged wheels. Visual upgrades include gold-colored seatbelts, brake calipers and valve caps.

Instead of leather, Polestar says the sedan will use high-end “progressive textiles.”
Production of the new model (including left- and right-hand-drive variants) is due to begin early next year at Volvo’s plant in Chengdu, China. The factory, which Volvo built with parent Geely Automobile Holding Co., will launch the $155,000 Polestar 1 hybrid coupe this summer.
With a starting price of €39,900 ($45,400), the Polestar 2 will compete directly against Tesla Inc.’s Model 3 car. A limited-edition launch model will sticker for €59,900 ($68,100). Subscription lease plans will be announced later. The sales process will be handled online.
