Volvo Car Corp.’s Polestar unit has begun building prototypes of its upcoming hybrid coupe in Sweden.
The carmaker plans to produce 34 of the hand-built Polestar 1 prototype models for cold-weather, on-road and crash testing. Engineers will fine-tune the vehicle based on the tests.
Full production of the $155,000 Polestar 1 is due to start in mid-2019 in Chengdu, China. Output will be limited to 500 vehicles per year.
The vehicles will be offered through two- or three-year subscriptions, which will bundle car payments, financing, insurance and maintenance costs into a single monthly fee. First year output, including 200 units to the U.S., already is sold out.
