Germany's IG Metall union wants to reach a contract with General Motors Co.'s Opel unit by Oct. 26.
Opel is seeking labor cost concessions as part of a sweeping restructuring aimed at ending years of losses. If the company and IG Metall don't settle by Oct. 31, Opel will be obliged to begin paying a 4.3% wage increase that the union obtained in June for all its members in Germany.
IG Metall demands that the company outline a "growth concept" through 2022, including an expanded vehicle lineup, increased exports and a repositioning of the Opel and Chevrolet brands.
The union also says any deal must contain long-term Opel commitments to the future of its factories and rule out involuntary staff reductions beyond 2016. The current contract bars job cuts through 2014.
The company said in June that it would close its Zafira MPV plant in Bochum, Germany, after 2016. News reports have indicated Opel is seeking a labor deal that will allow it to shutter the facility sooner.
