General Motors Co.'s Adam Opel unit plans to meet on Thursday with union representatives. But Opel says the widely rumored closings of two European assembly plants are not on the agenda.
Labor leaders representing Opel workers across Europe have been clamoring for weeks for a meeting with management. Until now, the company has insisted on holding talks only at the plant level.
GM CEO Dan Akerson describes the company's operations in Europe as a "four-alarm fire." The unit posted a $747 million (€567 million) loss in 2011.
