General Motors Co. says a European version of its upcoming Bolt electric 5-door hatch will go on sale in 2017 as the Opel Ampera-e.
The five-seater is expected to have a range of at least 320 km (200 miles) per charge. GM will produce the Ampera-e alongside the Bolt at its Orion assembly plant outside Detroit. The factory also makes the Chevy Sonic minicar and Buick Verano compact crossover vehicle.
GM has not disclosed its sales target for the European model. Last year sources told Reuters GM planned to make about 30,000 Bolts per year, including a variant for Opel. The U.S model is scheduled to launch in late 2016.
The car will use a GM-designed motor, underfloor battery and power control system supplied by South Korea’s LG Group.
GM has said the Bolt will cost less than $30,000 (€26,500) in the U.S. after deducting a federal tax credit of $7,500.
