General Motors Co.'s Opel unit plans to cut work hours at two factories to match output with the shrinking Russian car market and moderate demand in Europe.
Affected plants are Eisenach (Corsa mini-hatchbacks and Adam city car) and Russelsheim (Insignia midsize sedan and Zafira Tourer 7-passenger minivan).
Opel didn't offer details. But it says it is applying for government aid covering 25 work days at Eisenach and 15 days at Russelsheim.
The company had hoped to sell 80,000 cars in Russia this year, up from 65,000 in 2014. But sales through the first half of 2115 totaled less than 9,100, down 73% from the same period in 2014, according to the Moscow-based Assn. of European Businesses.
