Nissan Motor Co. says it will increase U.S. output of its Leaf electric sedan by an unspecified amount within the next two months because of an upswing in demand.
Leaf sales surged in January after the company began building the car in Smyrna, Tenn., and cut the retail price 17% to $29,700.
Nissan sold 18,100 Leafs in January-October (80% of them produced in the U.S.) compared with 6,800 all-imported units in the same period last year, according to Autodata Corp. Dealers have a 20-day supply of the cars about one-third the normal inventory, according to Automotive News.
The company tells reporters at a conference ahead of the Los Angeles auto show that the Leaf is now profitable.
