Nissan Motor Co. plans to supplement its Leaf electric sedan in Japan with two more EVs as early as fiscal 2016, according to The Nikkei, which cites no sources.

The newspaper says one of the new electrics will be priced at 2.9 million yen ($23,800), compared with about 3.5 million yen ($29,000) for the Leaf. The new model will boast a greater range per charge than the Leaf's 228 kilometers (141 miles).

The second EV will be a minicar Nissan is developing with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. The car's range will be less than the Leaf's but is expected to cost less than half as much: about 1.5 million yen ($12,400).

Nissan also is preparing to introduce a hybrid powertrain option for its most popular model in Japan, the 1.8 million-yen ($14,900) Note mini-MPV, The Nikkei reports. The newspaper points out that to date Nissan has offered hybrid systems only in its more expensive models.
