Nissan Targets Thailand to Market Extended-Range Hybrid

Nissan Motor Co. has chosen Thailand as the first market outside Japan to get its “e-Power” extended range hybrid powertrain, The Nikkei reports.
The system, which debuted in Japan two years ago, extends the range of an electric car with the help of a piston-powered onboard generator. The generator recharges the vehicle’s battery as the car is driven, thereby giving the electric powertrain a range similar to that of a conventional piston engine.
The configuration also enables a driver to simply fill up with gasoline if a charging station isn’t available. Nissan says the technology will help it expand its sales of electrified vehicles in markets that lack a EV charging infrastructure.
Nissan will introduce the e-Power system in Thailand in its Note mini-hatchback. The company plans to expand the extended-range Note EV to other countries in southeast Asia, and to China by 2022.
