Nissan Motor Co. hopes to develop an electric car it can sell in China at a non-subsidized price of $7,000-$8,000 (47,000-54,000 yuan).
Ghosn tells a conference in Paris that achieving such a goal will require a design “breakthrough,” presumably including a far less expensive battery. Nissan and alliance partner Renault have said previously they intend to create a lower-cost EV for the Chinese market.
Nissan currently markets the Venucia e30, a variant of its Leaf electric sedan, in China. But sales last year totaled fewer than 1,300 units. The Venucia has a base price of 242,800 yuan ($35,900).
At the same conference, Ghosn challenged the energy industry to develop “clean" energy to complement the zero-emission cars being built by the auto industry.
