Nissan Takes on London’s Iconic Black Taxi

Nissan Motor Co. says its version of the classic London "black cab" offers 50% better fuel economy and half the carbon dioxide emissions.
Powered by a 1.5-liter diesel, the NV200 London Taxi is based on Nissan's NV200 small van the same vehicle selected last year as New York City's "taxi of tomorrow." Nissan estimates the five-passenger cab could save operators about $1,600 per year in fuel costs compared to the iconic taxis made by Manganese Bronze Holdings plc, which dominate the market.
Nissan expects its taxi to complete London certification later this year. The company says it may begin field trials of an electric version of the vehicle next year.
An estimated 22,000 black taxis operate in London. Roughly 25% of the market has been captured since 2009 by Mercedes-Benz, which debuted a taxi version of its Vito van three years ago.
