Nissan Motor Co. will re-inspect some 320,000 vehicles recalled in Japan in May after a driver of one of the vehicles was injured last week by shrapnel apparently ejected by a Takata Corp. front airbag inflator, Reuters reports.
About one-third of the X-Trail SUVs involved in the earlier recall were actually brought in. Reuters says 90% of inspected vehicles were deemed safe and returned unaltered to owners.
Nissan dealers have been checking the airbag systems for signs of leaking seals that could allow moisture to enter and cause the inflator’s propellant to degrade. A similar issue has prompted recalls in the past seven years involving roughly 40 million vehicles made by a dozen manufacturers.
