Nissan Motor Co. is recalling 1.2 million vehicles in the U.S. whose backup cameras may not display an image when they should.

The campaign covers almost all Nissan models sold in the American market during the 2018-2019 model years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that the camera systems can be adjusted not to display an image. If so, they will retain that setting the next time the car is shifted into reverse rather than automatically switching on again, thus violating federal safety standards.

Nissan dealers will fix the problem with a software update. NHTSA says the recall will be conducted in phases, beginning in mid-October.
