Nissan Motor Co. is developing a long-range electric vehicle that it plans to launch in 2020.
The unspecified model will be about the size of the current Nissan Leaf electric sedan, Kazuo Yajima, global director of EV and hybrid development, tells Nikkei Automotive. He says the vehicle will have an estimated range of 550 km (340 miles) based on the Japanese driving cycle.
Media reports speculate the 2020 vehicle could be derived from the IDS concept (pictured) introduced at the 2015 Tokyo auto show. That vehicle featured a 60-kWh battery and a variety of advanced driver assist technologies.
Yajima says the updated Leaf due later this year will get a new battery that increases its driving range to as much as 400 km (249) miles from the current 280 km (174 miles) on the Japanese cycle. The current Leaf sold in the U.S. has an Environmental Protection Agency rating of 107 miles per charge.
