Nissan Motor Co. has launched production of an all-electric version of its Sylphy compact car in China.
Dubbed the Sylphy Zero Emission (ZE), the new model shares a platform and its electric architecture with the Leaf EV. But the car features a more mainstream design than the quirky Leaf hatchback.
Nissan says the vehicle has a driving range of 338 km (210 miles) on the Chinese test cycle. The carmaker also boasts that the Sylphy EV has best-in-class legroom, thanks in part to the battery being packaged in the floorboard.
The Sylphy ZE will be base-priced at 166,000 yuan ($24,400), after China’s EV incentives are factored in.
Nissan is producing the vehicle through its joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group in Huadu. The companies have produced 10 million vehicles together in China over the last 15 years.
The partners plan to launch 20 electrified models under their four brands (Nissan, Infiniti, Dongfeng and Venucia) by 2022. Such vehicles are expected to account for 30% of the joint venture’s sales by that time.
