Nissan Motor Co. says it has temporarily stopped development work on the first electric car for its Infiniti luxury brand to await impending advances in EV technology.

When Nissan unveiled the Infiniti LE concept EV at the New York auto show last year, it indicated the car would go on sale before the end of 2014.

But Andy Palmer, the executive vice president in charge of Nissan's global product planning, tells The Wall Street Journal the company now expects unidentified advances to become available by then. He says Nissan decided to delay the LE so it can incorporate the new technology from the beginning of the product's life cycle.

Palmer did not say how long the delay would be or what new technologies Nissan expects to use in the car. But the Journal notes that battery cost and performance have hampered demand for EVs such as Nissan's $30,000 Leaf sedan.

The LE concept is fitted with a slightly modified version of the Leaf's powertrain and is equipped with a 24-kWh lithium-ion battery that provides a driving range of about 100 miles.
