Nissan Motor Co. is partnering with Ecotricity Ltd. on a campaign to persuade the British government to create and install road signs to help drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles find charging stations. The companies note that there are more than 9,000 EV charging points across Britain, but there is no official symbol for the technology.
Nissan and Ecotricity, which generates electricity from renewable sources and operates EV charging stations throughout Europe, are calling for charging signs to be placed near highway exits as is done for conventional fuel stations. They also want universal symbols that distinguish between standard and rapid charging points.
In addition to helping current owners locate nearby chargers as they travel, the partners say signs also would educate the general public about the growing EV infrastructure.
Nissan has sold nearly 12,000 all-electric Leaf small cars in Britain since introducing the EV there in 2011.
