Electrically assisted steering systems that car owners say may suddenly turn off have prompted an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The agency's Office of Defects Investigation has launched a probe that covers about 938,000 of Ford Motor Co.'s 2010-2011 Mercury Milan and 2010-2013 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans.
ODI estimates about 938,000 cars could be affected.
NHTSA has received more than 500 complaints about rack-mounted electric power-assisted steering systems that fail while the car is moving. In some cases, restarting the car turns on the system again, at least temporarily.
