A notice was posted this week in the Federal Register saying the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has "tentatively concluded" the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV failed to properly handle 22 recent recalls.
The strongly worded announcement says FCA was tardy in notifying the agency and vehicle owners about various safety defects involving more than 11 million of the company's cars, trucks and SUVs. The notice says FCA also has been too slow in repairing recalled vehicles.
NHTSA's blunt assessment previews its scheduled public hearing on July 2 into FCA's shortcomings. FCA, which says it has updated procedures to address the agency's concerns, argues the hearing is unnecessary.
Reports say FCA could face more than $700 million in fines if the agency rules the company failed to meet its legal obligations. NHTSA also could order the company to buy back or replace affected vehicles.
