Porsche AG says the next-generation of its Macan compact crossover vehicle will be sold only with a fully electric powertrain.
Production of the redesigned model will begin “early next decade” at the carmaker’s facility in Leipzig, Germany, according to the company. Media reports suggest the vehicle will be launched in 2022.
Porsche previously has said about half of its vehicles will be full EVs or hybrid models by 2025. The company is launching the Taycan electric sports sedan this year.
The second-generation Macan will share a platform with the Taycan, the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture Porsche co-developed with Audi. Those vehicles will feature fast-charging 800-volt batteries.
The Macan accounted for nearly one-third of Porsche’s global sales last year. Porsche introduced the crossover in 2014 and gave it a mid-cycle update last year. The current model (pictured) offers three engine choices: a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 and a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6.
