Russia may revisit a proposal to ban imported cars if nations in the West impose new economic sanctions on the country, says business daily Vedomosti.

The West, which blames Russia for supporting separatist rebels in Ukraine, has levied sanctions on Russia's energy and financial sectors. It also has threatened to broaden the measures. Russia has retaliated with bans on certain foods from Australia, Canada, Europe and the U.S.

Vedemosti says President Vladimir Putin previously rejected a ban on car imports. But it cites an unidentified government source who says new sanctions could prompt Russia to revisit the plan and impose a full or partial ban on cars imported from the sanctioning countries. Another source tells the newspaper the government hasn't yet been asked to make such a move.

Imports accounted for 27% of new-car sales and 46% of commercial truck sales in Russia in the first half of 2014, according to the newspaper.
