Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus arm is introducing a new hybrid-electric drivetrain this year in its all-new LC 500h sports coupe, which will be unveiled in two weeks at the Geneva auto show.
The so-called multi-stage hybrid system replaces the continuously variable transmission used in most hybrid setups with a rear-mounted 4-speed automatic. Lexus says the move will more closely align engine speed with the driver's input through the accelerator pedal. Paired with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, this will allow the LC 500h to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in less than five seconds, according to the carmaker.
The V-6 makes 295 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque, with power being increased to 354 hp with the hybrid system. A semi-manual “M Mode” allows drivers to initiate gear shifts to provide a sportier feel.
The added weight of the 4-speed transmission is offset by a lighter electric motor and a more compact lithium-ion battery, enabling the new system to match the weight Toyota’s current hybrid package. Media reports speculate Lexus will use two electric motors in the setup as it currently does, with one to drive the wheels and one to recharge the battery.
The LC 500h, along with the base V-8-powered LC 500 introduced at last month’s Detroit auto show, is built on Toyota’s all-new premium, rear-wheel-drive GA-L platform with a 113-inch wheelbase. The lightweight design includes an aluminum front hood and fenders, carbon fiber door structures with aluminum skins, a carbon-fiberglass composite trunk lid, aluminum front suspension towers and ultra-compact LED headlamps. Forged alloy wheels and a carbon fiber roof are optional.
