The average fuel economy of new cars and light trucks sold in the American market reached a record-high 25.8 mpg in August, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

The average fuel economy of new cars and light trucks sold in the American market reached a record-high 25.8 mpg in August, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
The previous monthly high was 25.7 mpg in May. UMTRI's Eco-Driving Index is a sales-weighted model-by-model calculation of combined city/highway fuel economy ratings from the Environmental Protection Agency.
The index for model years has risen steadily from 20.8 mpg in 2008 to 24.6 mpg last year and 25.3 mpg for the current model year to date. UMTRI defines a model year as beginning in October and ending the following September.
